How would you use a blog in your subject area?

Blogging is free, easy and can become quite addictive - how many times this week have you updated your facebook profile ha?  When I first starting using them I was quite blinkered, in that I only thought that they'd be good for 6th form students, or for certain subjects.  However, they are just as applicable to KS3 and KS4 and, I'm hoping that with your input, together we'll come up with a whole host of fun, interesting and educational ways to use a blog as part of our regular teaching.  So, as experts in your own areas tell me how you would use a blog.  Let the blogging begin...

  1. I think that we will be able to start discussions about grammar problems that students can answer and teachers can help with. It would be good to start off a story (focusing on using certain vocabulary or grammar) and get students to carry on with it.

  2. I am also being a little blinkered in thinking that blogging is certainly going to be useful with my 6th form class but need to have a good think about how I can use blogs lower down the school in maths. Any ideas would be most welcome.

  3. I think this is a boss idea for Sociology to facilitate dicussions on sociological debates but also as a method as communication for any problems with essays set etc...

  4. This would also be a good idea for students to voice their opinions on what they would want to learn and what teaching styles suit them.

  5. I think blogging can be really useful as students can access it from home so if they need a little extra support, us as teachers and their fellow peers can help them out. It is also good for sharing resources, particularly when they are working on presentations and other research projects.

  6. I think it would be very useful for sixth form and KS3 discussions. However I think it would still be important to use the blog reactions and answers in the lesson to focus on pupils mistakes and praise good input.

  9. Thanks for all of your comments. Over the next week or so i'll be posting some ideas on this page about how to use blogs in your own subject areas so please let me know what you think of them. Also let me know if you get any feedback from pupils (positive or negative) or find an interesting way of using the blog yourself.
Last night certainly gave me some ideas, i particularly liked Helen's idea of using it as an FAQs page for trips etc.

  17. a good idea would be to make it quite flashy, interactive and above all with good writing so that the readers adolescents interest to them as well as to think enough in the content of this so that it is very visited
